Nilanjan Chakraborty is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University (SBU). He also holds an Affiliate Faculty appointment in the Department of Computer Science at SBU. Prior to joining SBU, he spent time as a project scientist and a postdoctoral fellow at the Robotics Institute in Carnegie Mellon University. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and he obtained his PhD in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research interests are in robotics, artificial intelligence, dynamical systems, and applied optimization. He is interested in developing capabilities for robots that will allow them to achieve long-term autonomy and work reliably alongside human teammates. He specializes in developing contact dynamics-based simulation and planning algorithms for manipulation, algorithms for robot motion planning, and algorithms for distributed planning in multi-robot systems.
